Basic Design or Initial Design is the preliminary design step. Some of the design notes in this section are:

Determining Principal Particulars : A comprehensive list of all the available emprical formulaes for estimating principal particulars in the early design stage.

Principal Dimensions & effects : To study the effects of principal dimensions on the ship design.

MARPOL calculation : To find the breadth and width of a ballast tank for a double hull tanker. Also to find the worst case damage stability condition.

Freeboard calculation : To find the freeboard draught (maximum allowable draught) and finalise the freeboard mark.
