Marine engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the design, installation and operation of marine machinery. In shipbuilding, marine engineers deals with the design of all machinery systems, in most cases along with the naval architect.

Ships are large, complex vehicles which must be self-sustaining in their environment for long periods with a high degree of reliability. There are various systems and machinery on board the ship that serves this purpose. Marine engineering is the field that focus on the design, operation and maintenance of these systems and machinery on a ship.

It is an integrated engineering effort comprising of many engineering disciplines directed to ensuring that they result in the above focus.
